We’ve mastered the art of excuses, haven’t we? “I don’t know how,” “I’m too busy,” “The dog ate my Bible,” and the classic: “I took Ex-Lax instead of Prozac—I can’t leave the bathroom but I feel great.” In the Christian world, excuses abound: “It’s the preacher’s job,” “I’ve done my part,” or “I’m not gifted.”

Excuses are nothing new. Jeremiah had his, but for every excuse, God had a promise.

I. Excuse: The Task Is Too Hard
Jeremiah was called to be a prophet, not a priest. A prophet’s work was unpredictable, dangerous, and often unwelcome. But God reminded him: “I chose you before I formed you” (Jer. 1:5). God’s purpose replaces fear with calling. Like Jesus, who challenged hearts to secure eternal futures, we too are called to obey and proclaim.

II. Excuse: I’m Not Talented Enough
Jeremiah said, “I don’t know how to speak; I’m too young” (Jer. 1:6)—an excuse echoed by Moses. Many of us, shy or unsure, feel the same. But God equips the called. “I have filled your mouth with My words” (Jer. 1:9). Our weakness becomes the channel for His strength. God uses not the most gifted, but the most surrendered.

III. Excuse: The Timing Is Off
Jeremiah protested, “I’m only a youth.” But God said, “Do not say that… you will go where I send you” (Jer. 1:7-8). God’s presence goes with us when we obey. Like Jesus, who knew the Father was always with Him, we can walk boldly knowing we’re not alone.

IV. Excuse: The Message Is Dangerous
Jeremiah was sent with a hard message of judgment. He faced rejection, threats, and imprisonment. But God said, “They will fight you but not prevail, for I am with you” (Jer. 1:18-19). Like Jesus—and like the monk Telemachus, who died opposing violence in Rome—Jeremiah stood firm. When God sends us, He also strengthens us.

V. Excuse: Do I Have to Go Now?
God told Jeremiah, “Now, get ready… speak everything I command you” (Jer. 1:17). Obedience must be immediate. Delaying risks disobedience. Jesus obeyed without hesitation—and so must we. God’s power is promised to those who act when He calls.
